ECO‑GRANDEUR MEETS ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN
CUIXMALA Perched on Mexico’s Pacific coast in Jalisco’s Costalegre region, Cuixmala is less a resort than a whispered legend: 30,000 acres of private reserve, golden beaches, wild forest, and one of the most artfully edited collections of luxury lodgings in Latin America. Built originally by Sir James Goldsmith and now operated by his daughter, Alix Goldsmith Marcaccini, Cuixmala is a place that feels simultaneously grand and intimate, wild and decanted.
Set within the Chamela‑Cuixmala Biosphere Reserve, the estate is a sanctuary of tropical dry forest, lagoons, rivers, and three private־wild beaches. Wildlife roams freely, antilopes, zebras, crocodiles, tropical birds, sea turtles and the land is curated with both ecological sensitivity and old‑world romanticism. Sir Goldsmith’s vision was never of a hotel but of a home in nature, a refuge from publicity, a place for family, art, reflection. When part of that private refuge opened to guests, it kept that spirit alive combining service that feels less like hotel protocol, more like being a guest in a grand, storied estate.
Cuixmala offers several options of accommodations, each with its own personality. At the heart of the property, guests can stay at Casa Cuixmala, the masterpiece of the property modeled after Haga Sofia with an iconic blue and yellow dome. Casa Cuixmala counts with individually designed suites, sweeping terraces, a private pool and common areas. The spaces are opulent without being ostentatious, white‑washed walls, arched windows, Moorish domes, Talavera tiles, raw silks, lush fabrics, terraces that seem to dissolve into jungle and sea.
Guests can also choose any of the Bungalows offering exceptional hillside or sea views with private terraces and large open interiors. The third option are casitas located closer to Casa Gomez, more modest but beautifully designed. Every space is suffused with detail, artisan tiles, bursts of color, cool breezes, a sense that you are in a place designed to touch both the eye and the soul.
Cuixmala offers many excursions and adventures through the property such as horse-ridding, lagoon tours by electric boat, bird watching, sea turtle nesting, wildlife spotting. For those looking to unwind and relax, the hotel also offers private yoga classes and spa-style treatments in-villa. Food is a point of pride with freshly sourced ingredients from the property’s organic gardens, the estate’s orchards and the sea.
There are multiple dining venues, from more formal La Loma restaurant at Casa Cuixmala to relaxed Casa Gomez or the palapas near Caleta Blanca beach. Cuixmala is for those who want luxury that whispers, not shouts. It is a place where time slows, where you might spend an hour just listening to waves or following a trail through dry forest. It is not about many flashy distractions; it’s about the poetry of place.
If you are seeking magical sunsets, barefoot grandeur, wildlife at your doorstep, and rooms that feel more like personal sanctuaries than hotel suites, this is a masterpiece.
